Funding Science for the Future

For the
Birds

Our mission is to invest in rigorous scientific research that generates practical solutions, measurable results, and lasting benefits for game birds and the landscapes they occupy.

Hunters Supporting ScientistS and Research

There’s no science-based management without science, but current funding for game bird research fails to meet even modest targets. Hunters and conservationists should be at the leading edge of supporting rigorous game bird research.

About

The Foundation

Launched in 2026, the Project Upland Foundation seeks to connect hunters and conservationists with scientists working toward understanding game birds and their habitats. This is not a membership organization, but rather a way to give directly to the important work being done.

Show your

Support

Support conservation and science-based management by contributing to critical scientific research. Without data, management relies on emotions and politics. Your donation goes directly to the work, not to a complicated organization with large overhead expenses.

“To leave the uplands better than we found them”

Meaningful Impacts

Direct Action for the future of game birds!

Your support goes directly to researchers in the field who are studying native grouse, woodcock, and more in the context of their ecosystems. Current and past projects include understanding woodcock migration patterns, gauging the success of local sharp-tailed grouse reintroductions, improving data-sharing between states, and managing for mixed use of prairie lands.

Looking to the Future

Wild Game Birds, both native and non-native have a critical role in our future.

We envision a world where resources are readily available for scientists pursuing knowledge and practical applications of data, and where applied research is widely accepted as the foundation of effective, science-based management for game birds and their habitats.

Take Action

Join the mission to keep game bird research funded

Game birds fall well below other species when prioritizing available state and federal funding. Long-term projects depend on stable funding for meaningful results.

Hunters Supporting Science

Buying a hunting license doesn’t make you a conservationist, but actively supporting science-based conservation does.

Game Birds and Our future

Game birds are excellent indicator species of their ecosystems. Understanding them has a direct impact on all of us.

Prioritizing greatest needs

Projects are selected based on overall impact and identification of critical funding gaps. Results are never pre-determined or influenced.

Project Upland and
the Project Upland Foundation

Project Upland Foundation is an independent nonprofit public charity recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service.

The Foundation is affiliated by name and shared conservation values with Project Upland, a separate for-profit publishing company. While the organizations share a commitment to upland bird conservation, they are legally, financially, and operationally independent.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, maintains independent finances, and awards research grants through transparent, science-based review processes. Donations to the Foundation are used exclusively to support its charitable mission and do not subsidize any for-profit activities.
